Identification

Abstract

This dataset presents the surficial geology of the Chaudière River Watershed. The study area designates the Chaudière River watershed, located south of the St. Lawrence River, near Québec City. The Quaternary stratigraphy from the base upward consists of a sequence of 1) glacial sediments characterised by continuous or discontinuous till, till reworked by melt waters and wave action, and thin till; 2) glaciofluvial sediments locally overlie till units and comprise ice-contact sand and gravel, outwash fan silt and sand and moraine sediments; 3) glaciolacustrine sediments mainly consist of rhythmic sand, silt and clay deposited at the bottom of glacial lakes; 4) coarse littoral and prelittoral glaciomarine sediments consisting of stratified silt, sand and gravel, and 5) deep-water glaciomarine sediments consist of fine silty to clayey particles found mainly in the Appalachian Piedmont up to the marine limit with a mean elevation of ~175 masl and with a maximum elevation of ~190 masl.

The dataset comes from the Quat_Chaudiere_Clip2.shp file of the Chaudière River Watershed project archives folder. Surfical geology unit were reclassified according to Geological Survey of Canada standard surficial geology legend (http://dx.doi.org/10.4095/290144) when it was possible - with the understanding that some units might not perfectly match in the new classification. The original classification is kept in the dataset.
